Chapter 65

They found the ladies sitting in the parlour drinking tea, and the atmosphere was more than a little strained. Will wondered just how well Araminta got on with her sister in law. Kendall’s wife was chatting away to Eleanor, leaving Araminta and Miss Rose smiling politely in silence. They stood when the gentlemen returned and Araminta made a bee line for him.

“Mr. Marsden, perhaps you can settle an argument for us,” she said, capturing his arm and towing him towards Miss Rose.

“I would be happy to be of service if I can,” he said, although he had no notion of what she might mean, or want. He smiled down at her. She had lovely grey eyes, rather like Dearne’s. He offered his arm, and they moved to the edge of the room where he sat with her as she picked up a book.

“How can I help you?” he asked again.

“Nothing really,” she whispered, casting a glance over at Holbrook who was holding court with Kendall and his wife. “I thought perhaps you could do with rescuing.”
