“What will you do about your family?” Dearne asked. They hadn’t even discussed the issue of Will’s father, or what might be waiting for him back in York. Kendall was bound to relay the information he had met Will, and Dearne had no idea how this might affect him.


Will stared at the coverlet and shook his head slightly. “No idea.”


“What will you do if we don’t get your money back?”


Will shook his head, eyes still down. “I’d die rather than go back. I’ll just start again. I did it once, I can do it again.”


“Do you believe me when I say I had nothing to do with it?”


Will’s gaze shot up to meet Dearne’s and it was filled with misery. “God, yes. Can you ever forgive me for what I did?”


Dearne nodded. “I understand you were upset. It was an easy conclusion to jump to.”


“But I hit you…” Will squeezed his hand tight.
