Chapter 12

She didn’t respond. For a minute I thought she was going to get up and leave instead, she started to laugh.

“I would almost make an exception with Barrett, but—” she paused and reached out her hand to mine, “—you are right, if you see something, if you truly feel that there is something you can do with your gift to ease suffering, you must do it.”

I could feel relief wash over me as she squeezed my hand tightly and then let it go.

“You said something when you went behind my eyes; you said something in another voice.”

“I did?” She shrugged. I couldn’t say, “What was it?”

“You said you or her,” and it almost sounded like you were hissing, like a snake.”

My aunt turned her eyes to the sky as if searching for something. The moon was out and waning. It would be moon dark in a few days. A dangerous time to be dealing with anything unnatural and I was beginning to understand that whatever had Barrett’s daughter was indeed unnatural.
