Chapter 23

We hung up and I was left with an idea and one last thought. I stood up and went back to Barrett’s bedroom where he was soundly sleeping.

I went to the window, looked up at the stars, no moon, but there were stars. There was hope.

“That’s exactly what I’ll do Aunt, exactly.” I left the window open and the blinds pushed apart, crawled into bed next to Barrett and fell asleep looking up at the stars. 11: Inside

Barrett was sullen the next morning. I could tell he was confused. When I asked what he remembered from the day before it was as if I were asked him to recall a dream.

“I’m going to see the tree,” he said when I came out of the bathroom and saw him putting on his sneakers.

“What?” I hurriedly found my clothes and just barely got my shoes on by the time he was headed to the door.

“Barrett, what are you talking about? There’s nothing there?”
