Chapter 17

Lucien had started to doze when Abel next spoke.

“What do you think will happen to us if we get rescued?”

Lucien gave the question some brief thought before replying. “What do you mean? I, for one, will be over the moon.”

“No, I mean to us. We’ve made important discoveries today, about each other, and about ourselves.”

Lucien’s thoughts turned immediately to his wife and baby. “I’d want to find my family. I’d want to know they’re doing well.”

Abel sat up, drawing his knees up and resting his arms on them. Lucien sensed that perhaps Abel hadn’t received the answer he’d been expecting.

“I’m sorry,” said Lucien. “But wouldn’t you rather I was honest?”

“And if your wife can’t be located? Or if she’s taken another husband?”

Lucien sighed. “I certainly couldn’t rest until I’d found her. I loved her. And then there is my child…”

“Lovedher?”

Lucien frowned at his slip, and at Abel leaping on it and drawing attention to it.
