He arrived at the signal fire minutes later and dropped to his knees. He picked up the fire rocks, though his hands were shaking so much he couldn’t strike them properly.

“Come on. Come on,” he mumbled, each time more emphatic than the last. “Come on!”

After several attempts and quite a bit of blue language, he got the fire going, blowing on it until the tiny flames took. Soon, the bonfire was ablaze, and Lucien had to step back. But the smoke wasn’t thick enough, or dark enough. He had to make the people on board the ship see it. He hadto!

He ran to the edge of the jungle, grabbing at anything he could find. He broke off great branches of green leaves, and tore at vines. Each armful he threw onto the fire until a thick column of dark grey smoke billowed into the air, rising high over the island.

How can they notsee that?
