Chapter 23

“Are there any questions?”

“No, sir,” said Lucien.

He heard Abel trying to stifle a laugh.

Officer Charlesworth appeared unimpressed. “Right then. I’ll leave you to your own devices. Remember—” he looked at them sternly “—dinner at six.”

Lucien felt like a naughty schoolboy being chastised by the headmaster.

“So, what would you like to do first?” asked Abel after Charlesworth had left.

“Find Sarah. To see what’s become of her. Once I know she’s safe and well, I can get on with things. I won’t be able to do anything until I have seen for myself that she’s okay.”

“And if she’s no longer in Sydney Town?”

“We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.”

He started to walk away, but Abel caught him in his arms. “Come here, you.”

Abel embraced him, and kissed him. It was a long, hungry kiss, and despite the fact they could get caught, Lucien didn’t care. He wanted Abel’s lips on his more than he wanted anything else.
