Chapter 21

“What’s going on?” I asked him as we quick-walked to the lot where we’d parked our cars.

“You don’t want to know.”

I felt a cold shiver go down my spine. “Who’s…?” I didn’t want to say dead, although I was certain that was the case.

He looked over the roof of his car. “Tyler Sanders was attacked.”

“Fuck, no!” My first, very inane thought, as I said that was—At least he’s off Steve’s suspect list now. My next one was—Why Tyler? But then, why any of them? My hands were shaking as I turned the key in the ignition and it was all I could do to concentrate on pulling out of my parking space.

Steve slapped the portable light bar on the roof of his car and took off. I was out of the lot a minute later, moving slower than him since I’m only a citizen, and with my luck, breaking the speed limit would only get me stopped by an alert cop.
