Chapter 31

“I’m not going anywhere,” I told him. “I like it right where I am.”

I suspected he was purposely misreading my words when he replied, “Living on the Lane?”

“No.” I kissed his cheek. “Here, with you holding me.”

“Good, because I intend to do it as often as possible.” He cupped my jaw with one hand then kissed me. I fell into it, savoring our first real kiss. It might have deepened if his phone hadn’t rung at that moment. He broke away, swearing as he answered. A moment later he was on his feet, the phone still pressed to his ear. “I’ll be there in ten,” he told the caller then hung up.

“Another case?” I asked.

“Yeah.” He bent to kiss me quickly. “A bad one, from the sound of it. I’ll…call when I can, but don’t stay up waiting.” He tapped my nose. “Take your pills.”

“I will.” I gripped his hand. “Be careful.”

“Always.” With that said, he left.
