A young man ran past, laughing, as three older men with erections chased after him. Other, quieter members of this population sat atop rocks higher up, drinking and chatting in the shadows, their faces lit by the flicker of unseen flames.

“Would you like to try the lava?” asked Reginald.

I thought he’d gone mad. My expression must have told him as much.

He laughed. “It actually feels good. It relaxes the body. You must know by now that spirits don’t feel things the same way people do.”
