Amir hated waiting.
High tide started to kick in around two. With the seashells covered and the waves becoming more aggressive, everyone packed up, made sure to deposit all trash in the proper receptacles, and headed back down the trail. The ride home was always more easy-going. Instead of doing equal alternations in speed, they switched to going as fast as the slowest person in the group could go for fifteen minutes, followed by half an hour at a more restful pace. Amir’s legs were filled with the cold burn of lactic acid when they were still five miles from the trailhead, but he took deep breaths and kept pace with the indigo bike in front of him best he could.
Jae and Declan were invited to the Pride Riders’ next outing, which was tentatively scheduled for two weeks later. “I’d love to go out with you guys again,” Jae said brightly.
“We’d love to have you back,” said Tori. “It was nice talking to you, on and off the trail.”
