They took their break close enough to the Camp Squanto Boy Scouts Reservation that Amir was finally able to get a fleeting signal on his phone that pulled up Facebook. There was no message from Jae on the Pride Rider’s page indicating he couldn’t make it, though Jake V. and Jake R. had left such a message the day before. Jae’s most recent activity, according to his own page, was a photo of the pie he had made on Thanksgiving Day along with a few replies to comments that cut off Friday evening. The vice in Amir’s chest took him to the brink of puking from nervousness again.
Tori gave Amir Jae’s e-mail address, and taking note of the concern in Amir’s tone he asked, “Is everything okay?”
Amir couldn’t hold it in anymore. So much of him was filled with this oppressive constricting terror that it had nowhere to go but out. “I’m concerned that Jae’s and Declan’s relationship isn’t safe and the fact that I haven’t heard from him in days is scaring me.”
