Chapter 21

I stepped into the shower. He took hold of my arm and drew me close. We stood under the hot spray and I leaned my forehead on his shoulder. It felt good to have his arms around me. After a few minutes, we got clean and dried off. There didn’t seem any point to putting on any more clothes than a pair of briefs. Given our history, I wasn’t even sure that those would stay on more than ten minutes.

Crawling into bed, I realized just how exhausted I was. Sully held me as we fell asleep.

The gun shot sounded deafening. And the child’s head rocked sideways before he fell. She, I didn’t even know her name, turned the gun at me…

I sat bolt upright in bed, heart pounding so hard it hurt. I could barely breathe. Warm, familiar hands gripped my shoulders.

“Easy, babe, you were dreaming.” Sully’s voice was a deep rumble near my right ear.

“It…That wasn’t how…She never…” I babbled trying to sort memory from the recent image in my head.
