He looked at Reny, at the way he hung his head, and felt a stab of compassion for him. He wasn’t like them. He knew it. He’d lived a rough life full of bad breaks, and didn’t know how to do anything but survive. After a while you begin resembling an animal, doing anything to stay alive, and hoping somewhere along the way you might regain what you’d lost, but before you know it, it becomes a way of life.
