Chapter 14

“I have one of those next to the filing cabinet.” My voice took on an edge. “I mean, being the horn dog I am, how could I not?”

“I wasn’t saying that.” Major ran some dishwater.

“You don’t have to do the dishes.” Twirling spaghetti while holding a plate wasn’t easy. “I’ll get them later.”

“I like to earn my keep.”

“Stop saying shit like that. Jesus. I’m glad you’re here. I was just thinking how nice it is on the way home tonight.” I took his hands out of the suds. “I hope I never have to go so long without seeing you again.”

Major smiled. “Me, too.” And then he was off again, this time all the way to the living room for the travel cup I’d left there when I’d come in. He was going to work off his dinner calories while I was still eating mine. “I got that job I interviewed for.”

“Nice. Congratulations.” I picked up a dishtowel so I could dry while Major washed.

“A job, a place to live, you. I’m really setting down roots.” He smiled at me again.
