Chapter 40

“I think AJ’s a big flirt,” Abby said. “Maybe he’s working his way down the cast list. Gonna be a while before he gets to S if he’s only up to A this far into rehearsals.”

“Amos and AJ…they have the literation thing,” I said.

“Major seems pretty tight with AJ, too,” Abby commented.

“Yeah. They are.”

He was over there as well, touching and being touched, near the plywood trees I expected to bump into often during “Consider Yourself.”

“He knows how to make friends,” Abby said.

I only knew how to get men into bed.

“Back with the coffee. Come and get it!” And just as quickly, she was the center of attention.

We all gathered around the piano. No one seemed worried about leaving rings on the woodgrain. It was pretty beat up already. I set my cup down, too.

Major played, and he and AJ sang Oliver’s ballad, “Where is Love?” one of my favorite songs from the score. They performed it in some sort of round they had apparently made up on the spot. It was haunting and beautiful.
