“What then?” AJ asked.

They knew. He knew they knew. It was part of his method.

“He’s really good with them,” Abby said, not waiting for us to fill her in on our discussion.

She’d agreed to help with makeup for the show, and maybe come onstage to scoop up Cadence after his “Consider Yourself” broom routine. Cadence knew her well. Abby got to hang with Major more than I did. Even if he and I were in a show together, she spent time at his apartment many an afternoon, while I was stuck placating Eugene Fabro. I still hoped some rekindling was going on, though neither one had offered any hint that it might be. Still, if Cadence was going to run to someone other than his daddy, Major figured it might be Abby.

“I can’t wait to try it. Can you come back tomorrow?” AJ had asked Abby on our way to the woods, his hands clasped as if in prayer.
