Chapter 25

“Me too.”

We both squint against the sudden splash of light as we come abreast of the bar. Here the air is pink and blue, white and green, shimmering with music and striped with long shadows. We’re already two steps back into the tunnel of twilight when we hear Milton call out. I turn to look over my right shoulder, then stop and turn completely around when I see him running up the road.

Naturally he’s talking before he’s totally in earshot. He pumps my hand in greeting, sees Cole with his hands full and slaps him across the back, says something about gorgeous flowers and how was the afternoon. In my clunky Spanish I come as close as I can to “Thank you so much for sharing that cove with us. It was amazing. I hope you’ll take me back one day.”
