From there, Sarelle tied the other end of the rope into a harness around the mother, who pulled her offspring free in seconds.

“I hope it’s not seriously hurt,” said Keru.

Sarelle shook her head as she untied the ropes. “No broken bones. I have some salve which will help with the cut, and she’ll be just fine in a few days.”

The salve she applied had a pungent herbal odor which didn’t seem to bother the reindeer any, though Adley wouldn’t have liked to walk around wearing it. Smell notwithstanding, he was pleased to have taken part in the rescue. Reindeer were appealing creatures, not to mention quite important for the delivery of Christmas gifts. Humans, fond as they were of their technology, couldn’t come close to the magic of reindeer. Certainly no human invention could deliver presents to every child in the world over a single night.
