Chapter 36

“I don’t bloody care! The police can take a running jump! If they want to cover it up, then there’s something there and it’s a story! We follow it. That’s what an investigative reporterdoes, Tyler! He bloody well investigates!”

At that point, Alec chapped on the dark wood of the open door and coughed politely. “Mr. McGovern? Detective Inspector Carter.” He paused. “Mr. Tyler. What an unexpected pleasure.” His tone was bland.

Tyler choked. His face was still bruised.

McGovern though, changed gear smoothly. “I wondered when you’d turn up. Come in. What do you want?” He gestured to a chair by the mahogany desk. “Lew, get out there and do your job. And tell Annie to get us some tea whilst you’re passing her on your way out.”

Tyler shot him an incredulous glance and he back-pedaled swiftly. “I’ll ask her. Or better still, I’ll do it myself in a minute. Go.” He glared from under his green eye-shade before taking it off and throwing it on the desk, leaning back in his chair.
