After a good bit of poking round a few nights on the trot and one or two bad moments hiding from perfectly respectable citizens, he had found an empty place. It was two roads over from where he’d photographed Archie. If it was an Outlands Creature, they could hope it was hiding close by and would be easily attracted by the power when Kelly started to Work.

“Very well, then,” Kelly said. “We’ll have to hope it doesn’t need to feed again in the next few days. Is Ted out at Chapel on Friday, Vicky?” She nodded. “Right then. That’s it. Friday.”

In the meantime, Lew went back to the paper. He parked the bike and trudged up the stairs to the office.

“What?” He snapped at Annie, as he shed his hat, coat, and scarf and hung them on the umbrella stand.

“Nothing!” She looked at him cautiously as he sat and put his head in his hands. “What’s up, Lew? You look absolutely grim.”

“Thanks.” He started shuffling papers round his desk. “Is Mac in?”
