“That’s what we figured,” Greg replied.

Mom said, “I guess after spending a week there, you’ve gotten to know him, then, haven’t you?”

“Yes, Mom.” Greg affected a faux long-suffering tone. “I can confirm for you that he’s very nice.”

Mom grinned, and her sigh was as artificial as Greg’s tone had been.

My phone vibrated on the table where Dad had left it, and an image of Wes wearing a broad smile appeared on the screen. I snatched it, said, “Excuse me,” and tried not to look too much like I was racing out of the room. Once I reached the living room, I swiped and said, “Hello?” before continuing up to my room.

“Hey!” Wes said. “I hope the timing’s okay. I told myself I’d wait for your call, but I couldn’t get you off my mind, so…”

“It’s cool.” I closed my bedroom door and flopped onto the bed. “Your timing, that is. Well, everything’s cool…probably.”

“Probably?”

“Mom’s totally fine with it. I’m happy, so she’s happy.”
