“Yes. It’s cheaper to eat in, though I don’t mind going out, on occasion. Plus I’m single now.” A shadow passed over his face but was quickly gone. “I enjoy cooking. It’s been a long time since I’ve made a meal for more than one person.”

“Well, I’m honored to be that someone.” I pointed to the bottle. “May I pour the wine?”

“Certainly. Let me take care of the cork.” Once done, I took the bottle from him and filled our glasses. The wine should probably breathe a little, but I wasn’t worried about that right now.

“To the future,” I said, raising my glass. He did the same, and we clinked before drinking some of what turned out to be an excellent vintage.

“Not bad,” he offered, setting the glass down and then diving into the meal. We made small talk while eating, and, as I expected, Benjy had two heaping helpings of everything. One was enough for me, along with the salad. If I ate too much of anything, my ass turned into a wide load.
