At one in the afternoon, the entire Gillespie-Schneider clan had gathered around a table weighed down with two turkeys and all the salad and side dishes you could imagine. I sat at my usual spot, with Casey between me and Walt, and watched as Mom stood with a wine glass in her hand.
“We have a lot to be thankful for this year.” She looked at me and smiled. “Chiefly this: that Jared is home and with us for such a special day in our family.” Everyone cheered, and I blushed. “We’ve missed you, honey, and I know you have a life far away from here, but hopefully you’ll be able to come home more often, and that time will heal the past, so you can move on. No one is perfect, and love doesn’t care about that, either. Listen to your heart, and let it guide you.”
