Chapter 38

When we collapsed together on the bed, the pillows were on the floor and a picture or too had fallen. When did that happen? I lay beneath him, his weight on me just right as we struggled to catch our breath.

“Don’t leave me again, okay?” he murmured from where his head lay on my chest.

I ran a hand through his hair. “Never.”

I arrived at the bus station late Saturday night after saying goodbye to my family and putting Casey to bed. Walt and I sat in the SUV, waiting for the bus to appear. It would arrive at midnight.

“You know we’ll never live it down, right?” he said as he played with my fingers.

“You mean how loud we were that night?” I chuckled. “Nope, and I don’t want to. This way, everyone knows we’re back together, and there won’t be any questions to the contrary. My face may remain red for a while, though.”

“Yeah.”
