Van and I had been slowly thawing out toward each other, and he even stayed behind after one event to help me clean up. I didn’t know how to take his new behavior toward me, but it made it easier to ask for his assistance.

“Okay. Let me get this straight,” Van said as he peered at me over the half-moon glasses perched on his nose. “Viola has you planning a wedding about which you know nothing. It takes place in less than two weeks, and you need me to fit a tux for a groom as a body double?”
“Yup. Pretty please? I know I’ve been a pissy little prick in the past, but I’m working through that.I really need your help.”
He leaned back in his chair. “Dinner as payment?” he asked, one eyebrow arched.
I would do anything at this point. Swallowing a sigh of relief, I said, “Deal. Can you meet me at Antoine’s at five-thirty today?”
