“It’s not the same thing as a one-on-one connection,” Sam replied.

“Okay, fine, Mr. Expert. When was the last time you had companionship?” I challenged.

“Last night. Trisha Horton, phys. ed. professor.”

Oh, I had him there. “Ha! Now I know you’re lying, man! Trisha told me the other day that the new man in her life was a great guy who—” I stopped when I saw the knowing smiles around the table, as well as the blush that got deeper on Sam’s skin the longer I stared at him. “No!”

“Actually, yeah,” Sam replied, a little embarrassed, but happy at the same time. Who’d have thought?

“Wait, you really…And you like this girl, don’t you?”

“He’s been sniffing after that skirt for years. She finally took pity on him.” Larry put his empty beer bottle on the table and burped. I had ring marks because of him.

“Wow, I had no idea,” I said, bemused as I put his bottle on a coaster.
