“Of course I did,” she said, and the three of us burst out laughing.
Harrison flung his arm around her waist and pulled her close, pushing his nose into her temple. “You’re hopeless,” he mumbled and didn’t sound like he meant it. But I agreed anyway. Hopelessly difficult to be mad at.
“Did you talk to him?” she asked.
The smile that had lingered disappeared, and I shook my head.
“Why not?”
My stomach twisted at the thought of his burning eyes and desperate plea, and I looked away. With a trembling thumb and index finger, I pressed so hard on my eyelids, white spots appeared, and I had to swallow and swallow and swallow to keep myself from breaking apart.
“Oh, honey.” Her arms slid around my neck and she hugged me hard. “I’m so sorry. I shouldn’t have interfered.” Her voice was thick. After a moment, Harrison joined us and held us both in his strong arms. Surrounded by the love of my family, the lump in my throat slowly dissolved and I gulped down fresh air.
