“What happens now?” I asked, but kept playing.

“Now I beg your forgiveness and then we find a way to rebuild our relationship.”

“Just like that?”

He sighed. “I’m sure it won’t be easy. But I’m more than willing to do the work.” After a moment’s silence, he added, “Whatever it takes.”

I nodded and transitioned into another song and another. He never took his hand off my leg. His breath was warm against my thigh and caused me to shudder.

“I’ve missed your playing,” he whispered. “No one can play like you.”

And yet it wasn’t enough.

I tried to force the thought out of my head. If I was going to give him—and our relationship—another chance, I couldn’t hold on to my hurt. But great sex and a confession of love weren’t enough to make itgo away. I needed answers. Explanations.
