We didn’t have time to talk because his phone went off after we’d heated up and eaten the ziti.

“Crap,” Vee said after glancing at the display. “I have to take this. It’s work.” I cleaned up while he took his call on the porch. When he came back inside, he had an annoyed wrinkle between his eyebrows.

“What’s up?” I asked.

“I need to go into the office. We have a very important deadline tomorrow. But the associate who was going to work on it called. His wife was in a car accident and he needs to go to the hospital.”

“Oh no. Is she all right?”

“I think so. Apparently, it wasn’t serious, but they have to make sure. He’s worried.”

“Of course.”

“I don’t want to go.” He stepped closer and grabbed my hand. “We have so much to talk about.

“It’s okay. It’s not your fault. We’ll talk when you’re not busy.”

“Yeah…” His eye twitched and he shifted his weight.
