“If it’s hot and hearty, I don’t think you’ll hear any complaints,” Merl said, assuming the role of spokesman since no one else seemed inclined to say a word. “Hot food and all you can eat has been pretty scarce for me lately and I ‘spect for the rest, too. Not sure how to thank you, but you can be sure we’ll all appreciate it.”

Nate grinned. “That’s good. This is the quickest and easiest thing I could think of to serve.” He dumped can after can into the pot and then carried it to a large range a few steps away. He turned a knob and blue flame came alive beneath the spider. He pulled a big spoon down from a rack and began to stir the soup as it heated.
