Chapter 42

A snap came out of nowhere, inside his helmet, and echoed through his ears. Jason held his breath. The faceplate stayed intact, a solid sheet of glass. The air whooshed out his lungs in a gush of tension. It wasn’t bad; whatever had hit his helmet, but fuck if his heart wasn’t galloping like a racehorse now. “I think we just hit the edge of the field, guys. A piece of it just hit my helmet.”

“I figured as much when your heart monitor spiked.” A tense laugh came from Saito, too loud in his ear. The sound did nothing for his frayed nerves.

“I’d turn that thing off, if I were you. You’ll have alarms for my heart rate the whole time I’m out here,” Jason said. It was truth, absolute truth, but he pointed it out to Saito, because he wanted thatdamned monitor off. He didn’t want John to hear it. His lover was probably out of his mind with worry asit was. No reason to add to that.

“Copy that.”
