“I’d rather take the stairs.”

Wes’s ice blue gaze scrutinized my face, but he eventually nodded and steered me toward an inconspicuous door just past the elevators. We started to climb. By about the third floor, I reevaluated my decision. But I pressed on, infinitely relieved when Wes shoved open a door and guided me into a long, open hallway.

“I’m at the other end,” he said.

Of course, he was.

It seemed to take a long time to traverse what had to be only a hundred feet. I leaned heavily against the wall while Wes released the wards and unlocked his door. He ushered me inside. I kicked off my shoes and slid them under the edge of the deacon’s bench in the entryway before turning to take in the rest ofhis home.
