Chapter 12

He whispers, “You’re following me.”

I don’t feel it necessary to lie to him. “I am following you. You’re a mystery to me. I’m drawn to you.”

“Stop,” he says. “Believe me. You don’t want to know my secrets. We’re from opposite worlds, Pete.Keep me as the mystery man I am.”

I want to tell him that I won’t. Never. He’s far too interesting. I want to explain to him that he captivates me and…

He loosens his grip against my jacket and shoulders and kisses me. Abruptly, our mouths meet, and I meltagainst the brick wall, lost under his touch and closeness. His kiss becomes intoxicating, stronger than any drink Frankie has ever concocted for me, like poison for my system. The kiss is sugary sweet with just a little bit of sloppy spittle. It takes my breath away, and I become dizzy and misplaced. I’m hot, burning from the inside out, roasting under the canopy, next to him. I’m no one I know. Different. Meshed to him. What’s happening?

I feel him pull away. He smiles.
