Chapter 23

James said, “We should head back to San Jose. Huge storm is expected.”

“You’re right.”

They walked to the car, holding sideways as a strong wind blew.

James drove, and halfway there, the wind increased and rain poured in buckets. He slowed to thirty-fivemph, and the wipers on high failed to keep the windshield clear.

Kenji said, as they pulled into James’ garage, “We’d better prepare for a power outage. It always happens in storms like this.”

“Yes, dear. I’m sure you’re right. I’m glad we got all the roofs rebuilt and the lawsuit settled.”

“Yes, but I’m still stuck being association president.”

“Yes, and we got metal roofing instead of the shake roofs. I always wondered why people would put kindling on their roofs.” He smirked.

They settled on the couch at Kenji’s, and he lit a fire in the wood stove.

James said, “I wish I had thought to install one of these in my unit, but I didn’t know it was an option.”
