Seconds later, he shouts, “Me, too,” before slamming into me.

We stay coupled until he goes soft, and I enjoy the quiet, both of us satisfied.

When he slips out, I turn to him and tell him I love him. “Truly, Jack, I do. No other man can compare. There’s nobody else I want.”

“That’s good to hear, Wynn. When I saw you with that fellow yesterday, well, I went a little haywire.”

“He’s just a friend, one of the hands. We get on because we’re the same age while the other hands are older, but Lane is no threat to you. I promise.”

He kisses me a bit, then says he needs to get to work. “I’ll be back,” he adds as he buttons up. I cover myself as well, then watch him riding on. I drink from my canteen and give Doc some, too.

I figure it’s around two o’clock when Jack comes back alone. I am grateful that Frank paid his fine and wonder if maybe Jack told him I was nearby and he’d have to face me if he didn’t pay. “How’d it go?” I ask.
