Chapter 20

I’m staring into the white glop when I hear Jack’s voice. Looking up, I find him with a dish in hand. He cocks his head to inquire and I tell him to have a seat. As he sits, everything suddenly rights itselfand I want to tell him this, that he’s saved me once again. I feel a great rush of loving, staring at him while he eats.

“You’re ice cream is melting,” he says.

“Done melted. Guess it sounded better than it tastes.”

“Something wrong?”

“Nothing you can’t fix. Any chance you can stop by my room before I have to check out. I figure I have another hour.”

He continues to eat, which is hell on me. Might as well string me up. But when he’s finished his ice cream, he says, “Let’s go.”

My relief is so great I about dissolve. I follow him out, feeling like some kid, fairly dancing along as we head to the hotel.

Soon as we’re in my room, I’m climbing the front of him. “Please,” is all I say.
