“We watch the Princess retire and Samsel take his place?”
They made their way back to the beach. The Princess turned the sky pink and purple and all the colors in between as she sank beneath the horizon for the night. At his full strength, Samsel took his place low in the sky.
“So you can’t breathe underwater?” Maru asked once they sat on dry land. He supported himself next to Sartin, leaning back on his arms, their hands close, but not touching.
Sartin shook his head. “We surface, like the dolphins and the whales.”
“How long can you hold your breath?”
“The same as any other animal that lives in the ocean and breathes air. Now my turn.”
“Your turn for what?”
Sartin chuckled. “Ask a question.”
Even in the twilight, Maru’s cheeks glowed with embarrassment. “Go ahead.”
“Am I…am I…dead?”
“Dead? No, I saved you.” It was Maru’s turn to chuckle. “Why do you ask such a question?”
“I can’t hear any songs in my head.”
“Songs? In your head?” Maru repeated.
