“Let us prepare to guard the village!”
The tribe shouted after the chief yelled the call to arms. Sartin sat outside his hut with Maru. It was arare but public opportunity to spend time together.
“What are they doing?” Sartin asked.
“Everyone has a job to do in this time of war.” Maru pointed to the four warriors. “They will lead thedefense. They construct spears from the branches that the adolescent boys gather for them.”
Maru pointed toward a group of young women. “The girls watch the children while the wives and mothers prepare plenty of food to keep the warriors healthy.”
“And the elders?” Sartin asked.
“The elders confer with each other, advise the warriors, and direct the preparations. If the Kalama make it to the village, it is up to them to defend it.”
Sartin stared in awe. Getting along with his aunt, Belzer, challenged him at times, but he could not fathom waging war against the pod if he had become Alewar with Sommar.
