Sartin awoke with Akela standing above him.
“Maru sent these and I brought the sinew and needle to close the wound.” She handed him the fern leaves. He immediately ate a handful and swallowed the sweet paste. The leaves soothed his stomach.
Akela prepared the sinew and needle while Sartin chewed another set of leaves into the bitter poultice to pack the wound.
“How do you make the thread?”
“This comes from the wild boars on the island, but the same threads can be found in the animals in the sea.” She turned Sartin’s hand and wiggled his fingers. “You see those cords that control your fingers?”
Sartin nodded.
“This is the same thing. So look for it in the animals that have limbs. Here.” She slipped a bracelet over his wrist. “I wove a small amount of sinew and a needle together so you have a small supply until you can find more.”
“Thank you, your kindness is appreciated.”
