Chapter 8

The herd had handled the first river crossing well, too, which relieved Joe’s mind. A new herd, just barely broken to trail, could cause real problems at a crossing if they decided to act up. But the lead cows waded into the river like old hands, and the rest of the herd, after a few attempts to high-tail it back home, had followed along. The hands had picked their swimming horses that morning, knowing what was ahead, so everybody arrived on the far bank safe and sound. Even the remuda had given Jesus no trouble once they saw the cattle successfully clambering up the bank.
