“What exactly did he say to you?” Mark handed him a beer.
Rick shifted uncomfortably on the stool. “Well, he didn’t really say it to me, per se.”
Mark narrowed his eyes and took a sip of his beer. “So what, per se, did he say?”
“When I woke up, I heard him on the phone. He was saying it was his mistake and he didn’t want to hurt ‘him.’” He made air quotes. “It was more than obvious he didn’t want me there, so when he hopped in the shower, I took off.”
“And?”
“And what? I went home.” He shrugged. What more was there to tell?
Mark grunted. “Right. So he never called to see why you left?”
Rick’s cheeks heated. Shit. Mark was too persistent. “Yes, but I had my phone off all day. He also texted, but I haven’t read any of them.” His hackles rose. “Why do I want to read something that says I was a mistake?”
