Chapter 2

“She says she didn’t see anyone,” Jack concluded. “But it was a gang murder—these guys wouldn’t care if she were blind. They’re going to try to eliminate her as a potential witness, especially because the case is going to make the news tomorrow.”

“A gang murder, yes,” replied Baron. “Therefore not your jurisdiction. Didn’t Johnson from organized crime take over?”

“Yeah, I know.” Jack would still feel better, if someone took care of the little girl; the organized crime section didn’t have the necessary manpower right now.

“I’ll see what I can do,” the captain said. Which meant, Jack knew, that someone would be sent over soon to keep an eye on the kid. Baron was reliable; he was aloof and stern, but a good cop and an excellent superior.

As Jack turned to leave, wishing the captain a good night, Baron called him back before he could open the door.

“Yeah?”
