A couple of months went by before I saw Rio again. I’d decided to stay, for the moment. Whether I would be here in a year? That remained to be seen. Rio was dressed in a suit, as was normal, and had his laptop bag on his shoulder. It was a Friday afternoon, and the place was busy. Tony took his order, and I ignored the speaking look Rio gave me.

He staked out a corner of the coffeehouse and remained there for hours, working on his laptop. He would get another drink, or pastry, from time to time, but he mostly focused on his work, or whatever he was doing. Not that I was paying attention. And why he was even here when he could do the same thing at home or in a hotel or wherever he lived mystified me.
