Chapter 48

“Not much.”

“Have you asked him?”

“No, I haven’t.”

“Why?”

Neil shrugged. “Chicken I guess. I’ve been hoping he’d bring it up, but he doesn’t. He acts as if we’re a couple, but he’s never mentioned what will happen to us when the season is over. He must know I’m not going to be able to stay.”

“Well, you better talk to him. Cuz if you’re not staying here, you need to be applying for a job somewhere. Maybe you could work on the mainland and take the ferry back and forth.”

“I’ve thought of that,” Neil said. “I checked and there are only two small animal practices close enough to make it workable. Neither need vets, and the only large animal practice that has an opening wants someone with broader experience than just horses. They want someone who does the whole range of farm livestock. Besides, Rolf says the straits usually freeze over in the winter and there’s no ferry service.”

Jordan sighed. “That sucks.”
