Chapter 10

“I know you do. Everyone does, but I can’t allow it. At least not yet.” I released his hand then wiped the tear from his jawline. It was an improper move on my part. One I knew I would live to regret. Cliff turned his head into the palm of my hand. His unshaven face felt like fine sandpaper against my skin. “Cliff.” I broke the intimate silence between us. “You need to fill out the paperwork.” I knew my words would ruin our moment, but then again, we weren’t supposed to be having a moment. He looked away and nodded as if embarrassed by his desperate action of forced intimacy with me. “We’ll discuss any specifics when I return.”

“Please, don’t leave.”
