Chapter 14

Adam steered him toward the cubicle that made up his living space. “Go lie down before you fall down. You can sleep a while, but I’ll be waking you up every couple of hours to be sure you’re okay.”

“I know the drill,” Mike mumbled as he dropped onto the edge of the cot and struggled to unlace his shoes. “I wish you’d just go, though. I haven’t had a babysitter since I was about three. After that, my mom had two more kids and quit going out when dad partied. When she got drunk, I took care of the younger ones.”

“I’m no babysitter. Just want to be sure the Red Peril gang doesn’t show up and rip off some of those meds you’ve got for the dogs. You ought to keep them out of sight.”

“I hid some and I’ve got a safe coming this week. I’ll lock up all the risky stuff as soon as I can.”

Adam grunted. “Whatever. Go to sleep.”
