Chapter 20

“What is it?” Finn asked.

Brody looked at him, then tapped his foot on the ground. There were footprints, distinctive paws molded in the damp mud.

Finn shrugged. “Just a dog I guess.”

“You can’t bring dogs into a nature reserve.”

“Well I’m pretty sure there’s no wolves.”

Brody snorted. “No, but there are foxes.”

“Foxes.” Finn echoed.

“Yeah, they’re fox tracks. There used to be some here years ago.”

Finn clicked his tongue smugly. “Well, I don’t believe you.”

“I promise you there’s foxes.”

“Show me one then.”

Brody smiled and shook his head. “Fine, this way.”

Finn didn’t ask how Brody knew about the foxes, or the hides, or the birds. He feared if he asked, Brody would retreat. Finn was seeing the true Brody and didn’t want him to hide behind his surfer mask.
