Chapter 29

“I’m done asking questions. You wanna talk, then I’ll listen, but I’m not going to make you.”

Brody relaxed his hand against the door, then moved it to his lap. He picked at his nails and took another shaky breath.

“I don’t know what’s wrong with me. I just, I can’t go in, I can’t surf.”

“Well you can’t surf with that board, it’s too dangerous.”

Brody huffed. “I can’t afford a repair, and besides, I can’t surf with any board, not just mine. It’s like there’s a wall, and I try to push through it, but I just can’t.”

Brody’s voice hitched, and he rubbed the heels of his hands into his eye sockets. Finn reached and settled his palm on Brody’s knee, then squeezed.

“Have you talked to anyone?”

“I don’t need to talk to anyone, they all know I’m too freaked out to go into the sea.”

“No, I meant about what happened that day?”

Brody dropped his hands back to his lap, then thumped his head back into the headrest. “I don’t need to talk about it, it was nothing.”
