Benjamin hadn’t just lost Jack during that encounter, but also the ship’s doctor, and many other trusted men. Everything was confusing and chaotic that day, so he had no way to be certain, but he still couldn’t believe that Lieutenant Jack Hughes had survived.

You’re being an idiot again.

There really was no reason to lie to the man sitting in front of him.

“Well, I…I believe my friend died…” he started again.

“I see,” John murmured, sadly hanging his head.

“But it’s possible I’m mistaken!” the captain added quickly. “We were…separatedin the Indies, and I’d like nothing better than to discover that I’ve been wrong all this time.”

Benjamin chose his words carefully, telling himself he was only doing it to avoid disappointing the young stranger. But deep in his heart he knew this was only half the truth.
